Tuesday, October 28, 2014: Facebook reported quarterly earnings and revenue results that beat market expectations. The world largest social media network now has over 1.35 billion monthly active users with one third of its users located in Asia, 22% and 15% from Europe and North America, respectively. The number of Facebook monthly active users has increased by 13 percent year-over-year.
Revenue generated from Facebook advertising came in at $2.957 billion, up 64 percent from a year ago, with about 66 percent coming from mobile ads. Mobile monthly active users rose to 1.124 billion, up 28 percent compared to last year’s results. “Our strong results show the shift to mobile is working,” Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook’s chief operating officer, said in an interview. “Our performance is very broad-based. On his Facebook page, Mark Zuckerberg posted an update: “Today we had our quarterly earnings call and gave an update on our community’s progress. There are now more than 1.35 billion people using Facebook every month — over 860 million every day. Our community has come so far over the last few years. Thank you for being a part of it.”
Facebook continues expanding its presence in Asia region. “On China, we’re already doing more there on the business side than a lot of folks think about. A lot of Chinese businesses use Facebook to find customers around the world and grow Chinese economy there. It’s pretty meaningful for us already. That will be a long-term thing”, says Mark Zuckerberg.
The company will also focus on long-term investments including growing its applications like WhatsApp and Instagram and take the mobile messaging to a billion users. Facebook also invested in its new initiatives like Atlas that will allow marketers to tap its detailed knowledge of its users to direct ads to those people on thousands of other websites and mobile apps and compete with Google. “We’re going to prepare for the future by investing aggressively,” Zuckerberg said.
