After receiving shocking and unpleasant comments on her looks in a bikini, rapper Iggy Azalea has decided to quit Twitter. The rapper tweeted from her Twitter account: “I feel the hatred and pettiness i see online at all times is at making me become an angry person and I cannot be that.” and added that “The Internet is the ugliest reflection of man kind there is.” The celebrity is taking a social media time-out while her management will be taking over the account from today on.
Twitter is well known for its mismanagement of harassment issues and abuse reports. Twitter CEO Dick Costolo has recently admitted that the company has been dealing with abuse and trolls for years and have not made any significant steps to address it. Twitter is suffering from lack of reporting tools and quick response to harassment complaints, while celebrities are trying to fight back.
Zelda Williams, the daughter of Robin Williams who passed away in 2014 quit both Twitter and Instagram after online trolls bombarded her with disturbing images and hateful comments. A month later, Zelda returned to Twitter.
Despite having thousands of followers, Ninki Minaj temporarily deleted her account on Twitter after an unpleasant exchange of tweets with a group of followers.
The Oscar-winning celebrity, Adele, took down her account after receiving threats to her newborn son in 2012.
Unfortunately for celebrities, leaving the Social Media platform or passing it on to their professional PR companies are the only ways to avoid the trolls and escape hateful comments. Despite Twitter’s greatest advantage to connect with the fans, the company is not able to address the abuse problems and became a magnet for internet trolls who make hateful comments and treats.
