LinkedIn Welcomes Lynda.com, a Leader in Online Training

linkedin acquires lynda comLinkedIn purchased Lynda.com, an online learning company, for $1.5 billion. With the acquisition of Lynda.com, LinkedIn has entered the growing marketing for online education and learning and will soon be able to provide its members with educational videos and courses to help develop new skills. “When I look at lynda.com’s platform, I see a best-in-class collection of high-quality, premium content that is focused on professional skills — hundreds of thousands of videos, comprising thousands of full courses — that make it possible for anybody to easily and effectively acquire a skill needed to get their first job, get a promotion, land a business deal or advance their career,” said Jeff Weinder, CEO at LinkedIn in his post on LinkedIn Pulse.

Founded in 1995 by Bruce Heavin and Lynda Weinman, Lynda.com revenue totaled $150 million in 2014. The company employs over 500 people worldwide. Lynda.com offers courses for corporate, nonprofit and governmental organizations, libraries, college and high school students, and anyone who is interested in gaining new skills and knowledge. Lynda.com is a membership-based platform. One of the benefits of the platform is that its premium members can earn certificates of completion after finishing a course.

With over 350 million users, LinkedIn has become the largest professional networking site where people can search for jobs, share news and industry insight, follow industry influencers and connect with other professionals. Lynda.com provides its members and organizations with a comprehensive collection of online courses and premiums skills content. “This is such an exciting moment in the 20-year history of lynda.com, and I couldn’t imagine a better pairing than lynda.com and LinkedIn,” commented Lynda Weinman, co-founder and executive chair of the board of lynda.com. The acquisition of Lynda.com is well aligned with the LinkedIn vision of “connecting relevant knowledge to those in need of new or stronger skills” and help people keep their skills up to date.

Why E-Learning is Booming

According to an article by Wall Street Journal, the overall market for online education is estimated to reach $107 billion in 2015. The eLearning market is among the fastest growing sectors in the worldwide education and training industry. Online education offers access to training resources worldwide and provides an ability to learn anywhere and anytime. The rapid growth of the Internet-based tools and platforms like Lynda.com is changing the learning environment where corporate organizations are more likely to move towards blended traditional instructor-led training and e-learning.
