Dr. Maya Angelou, a renowned poet and novelist, died at her home on Wednesday, May 28, 2014. Dr. Angelou was awarded with the National Medal of Arts by Bill Clinton in 2000, the Lincoln Medal in 2008, and a Medal of Freedom, the country’s highest civilian honor, by President Obama in 2011. She also earned the title of the first female to operate a cable car.

She published a series of seven autobiographies, which focused on her childhood and early adult experiences. The first book she wrote, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (1969), was a recount of her life up to the age of seventeen, and brought her international recognition and acclaim.
