Entrepreneur Richard Branson is Britain’s high-profile billionaire. He quit school at the age of 16. It was this very same decision that led him to create Virgin Records at age 20, 44 years ago. His project started in the music industry and has since then extended into other facets of business. Virgin Group is now the owner of more than 200 companies, including a space-tourism company.

1. Don’t start something you don’t enjoy doing:

This might seem obvious but it isn’t.  Running a business takes a lot of blood, sweat, as well as caffeine. But at the end of the day, you should be building something you will be proud of and something you enjoy doing.


2. Be Prepared to Take Risks:

Every business involves risks. Be prepared to get knocked down, but success rarely comes from doing everything on the safe side. You may fail, but for Richard Branson “there’s no such thing as a total failure.”


3. Marketing is not a one way street:

Many good marketing ideas are sparked by reading the comments online and the conversations they spark. If you’re expecting people to be intrigued by what you and your business have to say or are doing, you have to genuinely be interested in their feedback and incorporating their feedback into your best practices.


4. Be genuine in your work:

Try to make sure your work provides a true reflection of yourself, and not just your professional persona. Whether on social media, on a plane or in the office, you (and your business) are far more likely to make an impression if you let your real personality shine through.


5. Give Back:

Being successful in business means making profit. Money is the bottom line. But satisfaction doesn’t come from money. To feel the ultimate satisfaction from the work you do, you’ll need more than profits. You’ll need to have a worthwhile, positive, emotional connection with what you do….and that means giving back to clients once in a while.
