Today the European Space Agency, Rosetta’s Spacecraft and Philae lander made history and social media is abuzz talking about it. The lander successfully landed on the surface of Comet 67P/Churyamov-Gersimenko. The landing was confirmed at 11:14 am EST on November 12, 2014.

The control room in Darmstadt, Germany was full of hugs and cheers after the landing was confirmed.

The mission aims to shine light on some of the mysteries of comets from the formation of the Solar System. The landing ended a 6.4 billion-kilometre journey that began an entire decade ago.

What is so significant about this day?

Landing on the small strange world of a comet is seen as one of the greatest achievements in space exploration. The bottom line is that it’s never been done before. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin would be proud of us if they were alive today.

People might debate the relative proficiency of robotic rovers driving on Mars or the Voyager spacecraft edging out of the solar system. But touching down on a primordial lump of rock and ice that dates back to the early days of Solar System – and which is dashing through space at 34,000 mph – is a real victory for all…especially since it took 25 years for the plan to be set into action and 10 years of journeying through space to finally achieve results.
