What we didn’t see coming was the 2015 MTV VMA’s breaking the Internet. Even though the amount of TV viewer ratings have dropped over the years, with only 9.8 million viewers this year, the amount of people tweeting about the live show increased, which broke the internet with 21.4 million tweets, seen by over 11 million people. The millions of tweets that were sent out during the 2015 MTV VMA’s made the show the most talked about non-sports TV show for this year according to the Nielsen Twitter TV Ratings.

Twitter’s New Features

Something else we did not see coming is one of Twitter’s new features. Twitter chose some celebrities and attendees of the 2015 MTV VMA’s to test the feature during the live show. Twitter already allows users to post GIF’s – (moving graphics) through other apps although users were not able to create them on Twitter. However this new feature will allow users to create them as well as add texts and stickers to it.

Twitter’s Interim CEO Jack Dorsey promised that “beautiful products” is a way that they are trying to better their social media platform and he can’t wait for the rest of the world to see it. As users are getting excited about Twitter’s new features, investors are more likely to buy more Twitter market shares because the new features can improve user engagement.

One celebrity to make the most use out of Twitter’s new GIF was Taylor Swift. During the live TV show the popstar was updating her Twitter status by making GIF’s with her celebrity friends. Other artists such as Pharrell and Big Sean also used Twitter’s new camera feature during the MTV VMA’s.

Project Lightning

There are rumors of another new Twitter feature named “Project Lightning”. The feature is supposed to improve coverage of trending events through curated videos, photos, and Twitter updates. “Project Lightning” will be comparable to Snapchat’s Stories that cover live events worldwide. Twitter is hoping to bring in prospect users by allowing them to use the feature without having to sign up.
