We all know how devastating a negative review on Yelp can be to your business. Most people don’t go straight to Yelp with their concerns about a malicious attempt to harm their online reputation. They simply Google themselves and if nothing shows up, then they believe that the review is virtually non-existent. That’s where many organizations impacted by Negative SEO have it wrong.
A few weeks ago, Yelp released a statement through their VP of Communications & Public Relations about the increase of misleading reputation management companies. They define the agencies as those that promise to help businesses remove negative reviews and gain positive ones for a fee. Many of them also claim to have a special relationship with Yelp and that they are acting on behalf of Yelp.
Apparently, those organizations are unethical and considered to be a scam s. Many businesses have fallen victim to them and end up paying the price for it. Yelp has decided to take a stand to protect its customers by filing a lawsuit against one of the recurring offenders; a company known as Revleap.
In the release, Yelp alleges that Revleap, which also goes by the names “Yelpdirector” and “Revpley”, has spammed businesses with unsolicited messages claiming that they can get good reviews to stick and bad reviews to go away. Many of those unsolicited messages carry with them surveys. Customers that respond favourably, and agree to post a review, are entered in a draw for gift cards in an effort to deceptively boost their clients’ reputations.
Other companies named in the lawsuit are:
- FEDERAL TRADEMARK INFRINGEMENT;
- FEDERAL TRADEMARK DILUTION;
- FEDERAL UNFAIR COMPETITION;
- BREACH OF CONTRACT;
- INTERFERENCE WITH CONTRACTUAL RELATIONS;
- CALIFORNIA UNFAIR COMPETITION; AND,
- CALIFORNIA FALSE ADVERTISING.
