It is not every day that you see someone celebrate failure. Yet, to succeed, we must also learn to acknowledge that we have tried, but failed. Every celebrity and successful entrepreneur has had at least one upsetting failure that has squashed their dreams.
Think about the years before Michael Jordan became a basketball star and the name behind the Nike brand. Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team and was told that he was not good enough to play the sport. Today, he allocates his success to his many failures and his ability not to give up on his dream.
How about Thomas Edison? He was granted 1,093 patents for his ideas. One concept that never took off was Edison’s interest in using cement to build things. Whoever excused the idea must have been drunk, right? Eventually, people started believing in the concept and realized that the concept was not such a bad idea afterall.
And yet, we are often inundated with images of success by the media that we often think that the stars we see on television or on the internet are products of overnight success. So, how can one learn from failure, embrace it, and then ultimately, use it for success later on in life? Here are a few words of wisdom I would like to share with you.
1. Acknowledge Failure
This is the first step in the journey to success. Accepting your failures allows you to learn in which areas you made a mistake, and in that way, you can correct those mistakes in the future. Albert Einstein once stated that stupidity is doing the same thing over and over again, expecting better (different) results each and every time. This couldn’t have been said any better. Too often, we deny that there could be a problem, or that everything is fine, but in the end, this bottling up can lead to depression if not handled well.
2. Never Give Up
Once you have acknowledged that you have failed, you can then begin to work on the areas that need improvement. This may involve hiring a trainer or mentor. A friend who has your best interests at heart could also assist you with your goals in life or career. However, you should be open with the people who are lending you a hand. No one can help you if you can’t help yourself.
Failure is something that should be commemorated because it is the springboard to success. Too often, we are over protecting our young entrepreneurs from failure, and paradoxically setting them up for failure. A butterfly is able to transform from its lava form to an insect because it works hard to get through the small hole in the egg. If one opens the egg for the lava, it will fall and die. So too must we view failure.
