Things are changing once again on Facebook. Not so long ago, images were king on Facebook. Image based posts were the best way for brands to reach their fans. They are still the most common type of posts and the most frequently promoted because they were the long-dominated post type. However, the real growth today in organic reach on Facebook is video posts.

The news comes as a result of a study conducted by SocialBakers. The social media analysts examined over 670,000 posts on 4,445 brand pages. The study excluded celebrity, media and entertainment pages.

The above chart illustrates how photos have become the least likely post type to reach audiences, while videos are now the dominant one.

The study also found that by the end of 2014, almost 27% of page posts that were promoted were video posts and 17% were image posts. The numbers represent the number of brands that paid to have their page posts in front of more people.

Why the change? Facebook has been focusing its attention on videos for a while now and according to Search Engine Marketing Land, the social network gets 3 billion video views each day.

Should you make the switch? Not quite yet. It’s important to know your audience and what kinds of posts they enjoy viewing most. Videos are great ways to tell stories and make a memorable impression on your consumers, but it is the well-performing posts that will ultimately reflect what your fans like to see.

Another strategy you can try is to get your fans to follow you and get notifications from your page.
